However, there are things we can do to make sure our home doesn\u2019t get water logged, or at least not as frequently as it has been recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is water logging?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because water flows, and usually flows downhill, it is common for low-lying areas to get flooded during heavy rains. The term waterlogging refers to the condition where urban or suburban land is saturated with water, or waterlogged, and is unable to drain normally. When the flow of water to the drains is blocked \u2014 either by a partial blocking of the drain itself or by an excessive flow of water into the drain \u2014 waterlogging occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which are the areas where you\u2019re most likely to get flooded?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with many things related to real estate, it all comes down to location, location, location. The factors that cause waterlogging are a combination of rainfall, the ground conditions, and the city\u2019s drainage system. Areas with heavy clay soil and lots of trees are more likely to get flooded during heavy rain. And the city\u2019s drainage system is mostly the same everywhere. So, the places that are most likely to get flooded are: &#8211; The central business district (CBD): This is where most of the city\u2019s infrastructure is. Hence, when it rains heavily, the CBD is usually the first place to get flooded. &#8211; Hesaraghatta and Koramangala: These two areas are located in the southern part of the city and are close to the river and lakes. Hence, they\u2019re prone to flooding and water logging during monsoons. &#8211; Jayanagar and Banashankari: These are low-lying areas close to lakes and the river. Hence, they usually get flooded during heavy rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Check out the drainage in your neighborhood before moving in<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also check out the drainage patterns in your neighborhood online. The website of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has a detailed map of the city, which shows the location and capacity of the drains. This will help you to understand the drainage system in your neighborhood and how your home is likely to be affected during monsoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stay on the second floor \u2014 or higher!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are looking to buy a home, it is advisable to choose a home on the second floor or higher. Low-lying areas are usually the first to get flooded during monsoons, and it is often difficult to get the water out. Higher floors are less likely to get flooded, and the water drains out easily. Third-floor homes are better than first-floor homes, and second-floor homes are better than third-floor homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When you can\u2019t avoid a basement apartment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are buying a home in a low-lying area and have no choice but to buy a home on the ground floor or a first-floor apartment, make sure you choose one that has a basement.
